Married at a young age into a grueling life of rural labor, Bhabini’s world fractured when the 1942 Quit India Movement arrived at her doorstep. With her husband swept away to a distant colonial camp jail for thirteen months, she was left alone to care for a massive household of over twenty-five people.

But Bhabini chose a far more dangerous path. At the absolute height of the catastrophic, man-made Great Bengal Famine, she turned her home into a secret logistical command center. Under the constant threat of British police raids and local informants, she stretched her family’s meager grain reserves to cook for and feed over twenty fugitive revolutionaries hiding in the dense surrounding forests, transporting the provisions barefoot along perilous jungle tracks.

Roots of Courage follows her journey past 1947, tracking her front-line defiance in the historic Manbhum Language Movement of 1956—where she walked over 200 miles to Kolkata and faced incarceration to protect her community’s native tongue—all the way to her final quiet decades in Chepua, where she lived to the remarkable age of 106.
