Bound in heavy iron fetters inside the dark dungeons of the Red Fort, Raja Nahar Singh refused to bow or beg for clemency. On January 9, 1858—his thirty-seventh birthday—he walked up the wooden gallows at Chandni Chowk with his head held high, rejecting the executioner’s black hood so he could face his captors with open eyes until his very last breath.
